Pittsburgh Defeated by Atlanta, 5-4
|
Despite a fine performance by first baseman Ernesto Martinez, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Atlanta Braves, 5-4. Martinez went 2 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The win was credited to 29-year old right-handed pitcher Ben Risoldi in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Matt Young took the loss. The second-place Braves improved to 20-13.
The Braves got a big at-bat from second baseman Joel Gully. For the game, Gully went 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 5th home run of the season gave Atlanta a 5-3 lead.
"We were the better team," crowed Gully.
