Pirates Edged by Padres, 3-0
|
The San Diego Padres faced a tough opponent in Pittsburgh pitcher Rich McMillan, but did just enough to pull out the victory at The Pound at Seaport Village by a final score of 3-0. McMillan went 6.1 innings and allowed no runs. Carlos Mella, who finished 3rd in the AL in saves with 40 in 2107, was the winner in relief. His record is now 1-1. The losing pitcher was Atsushi Hasegawa. San Diego is now 19-16, while Pittsburgh is 23-12.
San Diego got a game-changing hit from Evan Weinstein. The center fielder blasted a 3-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a winner.
Weinstein expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
