The Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted Willie Valiente and the Houston Astros, 8-6. Valiente was impressive in the loss. The Houston first baseman was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. Bryan Bassett picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 6-0. Jim Grangroth suffered the loss. Pittsburgh is now 24-14, Houston 15-23.

The result might have been different, had it not been for 26-year old first baseman Ernesto Martinez. Martinez had a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Pirates ahead, 6-2. For the game, Martinez had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," said Martinez. "But I like how we're playing right now."
