Reds Edge Past Cardinals, 4-3
|
The Reds grabbed a win, 4-3, at Busch Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from St. Louis pitcher David Avery. Avery went 8 innings and allowed 2 runs. Cincinnati reliever Dustin Guerin was credited with the win, to go to 1-2. Jaden McCullough took the loss for St. Louis. Cincinnati occupies first place in the National League Central Division at 24-18.
Cincinnati used the timely hitting of Jesus Najera to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 14th inning to put the Reds on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"Exhilarating win," said Najera.
