Preston Vail knocked in 3 runs to help Houston beat Boston, 7-5. The Tustin, California native tallied 1 single and 1 home run. Houston reliever Aaron Jernigan got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Jonas Bautista was tagged with the loss. The Astros, at 20-23, sit in second place in the American League West Division.
Houston first baseman Willie Valiente produced at a critical juncture. It happened in the top of the eighth with Ernesto Balderas on the mound and Houston leading 6-5. Valiente hit a sacrifice fly.
"We had some nice at-bats at the right time," said Astros manager Tony Monterosa.
