The Chicago Cubs got a superb performance from pitcher Aaron Morton. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Pittsburgh. The Pirates won the game, 1-0. Morton threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. Mitch White earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.2 innings. His record is now 1-0. The save went to Willie Lopez, his 11th this season.

Kurt Villarreal came through for Pittsburgh when he hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the third. With a runner on 2nd, he hit a two-strike slider to right field, staking his team to a 1-0 lead.

"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Pittsburgh manager Merlyn Evans.

At 24-21, Pittsburgh is in first place in the National League East Division.
