Riding the 2-hit performance of the 28-year old catcher Brent Shipley, the San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets, 5-1. With the win, the Padres have a record of 27-19.

With San Diego leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Shipley hit a 2-run single off New York hurler Reynaldo Perez. It was the 37th hit of the season for Shipley and put his team ahead, 5-1.

"That's how you're going to be successful," said Padres manager Tim Lentz. "It starts with pitching and it will always be pitching."
