John Thurman Field was the site of a true pitchers' duel.

The Modesto Nuts topped the Bakersfield Blaze, 2-0, in California League action at John Thurman Field. The standout performance belonged to Modesto pitcher and Petoskey, Michigan, native Taylor Franks. Modesto, at 78-59, holds down second place in the North Division.

Early in the game, right fielder Willie Ponce had a 2-run home run for Modesto. It was his 23rd home run of the season and put the Nuts on top, 2-0.

"I had a good game plan," said Franks. "I made my pitches." His manager concurred. "It was all there," Steve Kamps said, "the velocity, the sharpness of his pitches."
