Modesto designated hitter David Pugmire had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Pugmire was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, even as Rancho Cucamonga beat the Nuts, 5-4. The win belonged to Joey Lawhead in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Mike Calabro took the loss for Modesto. Rancho Cucamonga is now 99-41.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Rancho Cucamonga designated hitter Larry Crumpton, facing Mike Calabro, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Quakes the 5-4 win.

"It's great to get the crowd pumped up," Crumpton said.
