Fernando Contreras had an impact in the 5-4 St. Louis win over New York. The 25-year old right fielder was 2-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs. Ray Blasetti recorded the save, his 4th. The last-place Mets now sit at 15-33.

With St. Louis leading 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Contreras came up to bat against New York pitcher Nick Jenkins. Contreras hit a fastball to right-center for a solo home run. His 8th home run of the season put the Cardinals on top, 5-0.

"If it's down the middle," said Contreras, "you might as well hit it."
