Tampa Bay center fielder Israel del Valle was instrumental in helping the Rays triumph, 9-6, over the Chicago Cubs. del Valle went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Tampa Bay reliever Brian Benn picked up the win to move to 1-1. Aaron Hosey suffered the loss. Jeremy Coffen earned the save for Tampa Bay, his 7th of the year.

With Tampa Bay leading 6-4 in the top of the sixth, del Valle hit a fastball from Jim Gamblin for a bases-clearing double. It was his 18th double of the season and put the Rays ahead, 9-4.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said del Valle.

Tampa Bay is now 24-26.
