At Burlington Athletic Stadium, the Burlington Royals and Bluefield Blue Jays were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.

The Burlington Royals got a sterling performance from pitcher Jason Payne, but the Bluefield Blue Jays still prevailed, 6-1. Payne came in in relief and pitched to 18 batters. Bluefield reliever Mike Bourque, who is tied for 9th in the APP in strikeouts with 73, was credited with the win. His record goes to 3-4. Mike Shaw took the loss for Burlington.

In the top of the first, John Johnson ambushed a 1-1 fastball from Mike Shaw and hit a 2-run home run. It gave Bluefield a quick 2-0 lead.

"You score one run, you're not going to win," said Burlington skipper Jim Vickery. "You can have three Koufaxes and three Drysdales, you're still not going to win."

Bluefield occupies 6th place in the East at 28-44.
