Cardinals Popped by Pirates, 6-1
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, at Busch Stadium. Stellar pitching by Mario Santiago had a lot to do with it. The right-hander handcuffed his opponent all game. Pittsburgh, at 35-24, occupies second place in the National League East Division.
The Pirates got a big hit from designated hitter Jesse Wheaton. Facing St. Louis pitcher Mike Carr in the top of the sixth, Wheaton pounded a 2-run triple to right. His 4th triple of the season put the Pirates ahead, 4-1.
"Mario doing his thing just hyped us all up," said Pittsburgh manager Merlyn Evans.
