Boosted by the 2-hit performance of Mario Alvarado the Houston Astros defeated the San Francisco Giants, 7-1. Luis Rodas, the winner, improved to 4-4. He held the Giants to 1 run on 4 hits over 5.1 innings, while striking out 9 and walking 2. Miguel Samaniego finished the game for Houston and earned his 2nd save.

The Astros got a big hit from first baseman Hideyuki Takahashi. Facing San Francisco pitcher Mario Correa in the bottom of the fifth, Takahashi pounded a run-scoring double to center. His 4th double of the season put the Astros ahead, 2-0.

"No one player deserves all the credit when you win," Takahashi said. "And the same is true when you lose."

With the victory, the Astros record stands at 26-36.
