Inland Empire 66ers manager Jonathan Vasquez knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 22-year-old right-hander Joey Shelton silenced the host Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at LoanMart Field. The 66ers shut out the Quakes by a final score of 3-0, to give the 66ers a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.

Shelton tossed 92 pitches over 6.2 innings to clinch the win for the 66ers. The right-hander allowed just 1 hit, while racking up 8 strikeouts in the game.

"It's hard to overstate how much this mattered to us, especially in a short series," Inland Empire manager Jonathan Vasquez said.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga.
