Phillies Earn 7-6 Win Versus Pittsburgh
|
Pittsburgh designated hitter Kurt Villarreal had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Villarreal went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice, even as Philadelphia beat the Pirates, 7-6. The second-place Pirates now sit at 40-26.
Deshawn Martin's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth was significant, coming with a runner on 2nd and the game tied, 5-5. The Philadelphia shortstop hit a run-scoring single off Bryan Bassett to put the Phillies up.
Phillies manager John Lucidi wasn't all too pleased, despite the win, telling reporters that the performance highlighted some clear areas for improvement moving forward. He refused to be more specific, however. "I'm not gonna publicize our weaknesses," he said. "That stuff stays in the clubhouse."
