Series Lead Trimmed to 1 for San Diego After 5-3 Setback
The Chicago Cubs have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading San Diego Padres, winning, 5-3, at Wrigley Field. Cubs right-hander Brian Martinko threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Cubs to 2-1 in the best-of-5 Division Series.

Adam McCloskey took San Diego hurler Willie Guzman deep in the bottom of the sixth. His 3-run home run put the Cubs on top, 5-2. In all, McCloskey had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.

"We're one game closer to our goal," Chicago manager Vin Calia said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
