Villarreal Helps Pittsburgh Take Wild Card Game 1
The Pittsburgh Pirates got past the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 7-4 in the crucial first game of the Wild Card at PNC Park. Pittsburgh first baseman Kurt Villarreal was 2 for 5 with a home run, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2, to lead the charge. With a 1-0 lead, the Pirates will have two chances to close out the Cardinals.

Had Jesse Wheaton not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Wheaton hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-4, in favor of the Pirates.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Wheaton told the Pittsburgh Bulletin. "It's as simple as that."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
