Cardinals Down Phillies, 3-2
|
St. Louis starter Trent Vaccaro pitched well against the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a win, 3-2. St. Louis reliever Andres Martines picked up the win, upping his record to 4-6. Dave Quiram absorbed the loss. The last-place Cardinals are now 26-43, the Phillies 37-31.
St. Louis won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning. With no outs and Dave Quiram on the mound for Philadelphia, designated hitter Jose Nieto hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Cardinals fans to their feet.
During his postgame press conference, Cardinals manager Leyland Thomas told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
