Cardinals Handle Phillies, Grab 5-2 Win
|
The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at Busch Stadium, taking down the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-2. Starting pitcher Elijah Jones was a big reason why. Jones, now 3-6, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 5, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. The Cardinals saw their win-loss record go to 38-31. At the same time, the Phillies fell to 32-35.
Mark Wofford dealt the Phillies a blow in the bottom of the sixth. Batting with the bases loaded and St. Louis leading 2-1, Wofford, who finished 3rd in the NL in stolen bases with 60 in 2113, hit a first pitch fastball for a 2-run single.
"Elijah gave us a huge shot in the arm," said St. Louis manager Leyland Thomas.
