Brewers Defeated, 4-2, After San Francisco Rallies
|
The Milwaukee Brewers could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Jim Rainey into a win. Instead, the San Francisco Giants prevailed, 4-2. Rainey threw 6.0 innings of shutout ball. San Francisco sits in third place in the National League West Division at 39-39.
San Francisco used the timely hitting of Eric Mathews to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Giants on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
Mathews told a San Francisco Citizen reporter that he was "very happy" with the win.
