The 3-RBI night of first baseman Hideyuki Takahashi, who led the AL in home runs with 53 in 2106, helped the Houston Astros triumph, 6-5, over the Texas Rangers. Humberto Valenzuela picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 4-6. Josh Payne was tagged with the loss. The Astros raised their record to 46-36.

Houston got a knockout punch from Johnny Johnson. The second baseman hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Johnson told the Houston Bulletin. "It's as simple as that."
