Pirates Win, 6-2, Versus Mets
|
The exploits of left fielder Jesse Wheaton, who is tied for 4th in the NL in bases on balls with 40, helped the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the New York Mets, 6-2. Wheaton went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Javy Villarreal went 5.1 innings for Pittsburgh to pick up the win. The left-hander was charged with no runs. He scattered 4 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 2. His record improves to 6-3. Willie Lopez earned the save for Pittsburgh, his 24th.
Pittsburgh used the hitting of Mark Tallman to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Pirates on top, 2-0. For the game, Tallman had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"Solid game, solid win tonight," said a smiling Tallman.
The Pirates, at 52-31, have a comfortable 14½-game lead in their division.
