Washington Downs New York, 5-4
|
The Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets, 5-4. Washington pitcher and Rancho Santa Margarita, California, native Billy Lantry led the way. Lantry, the winner, moves to 1-2. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 8 and giving up 2 walks. Dallas Cart, who led the NL in saves with 46 in 2107, nailed down the save.
Shortstop Julio Vergara made an impact for Washington, when he swatted a run-scoring double off Jorge Chavez in the bottom of the fifth. For the contest, Vergara was 2 for 3 with a double.
"It was a good night for them and a bad night for us," said New York manager Matt Moore.
