Astros Topple Tigers, 9-3, as Valiente Shines
|
The Houston Astros defeated the Detroit Tigers, 9-3, at Minute Maid Park. Leading the charge for Houston was designated hitter Willie Valiente. He was 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. Miguel Samaniego, the winning pitcher, is now 3-2. He went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, while fanning 8 and walking 1. With the win, Houston raised its record to 52-39.
Paul Bown had a big 3-run home run for the Astros in the bottom of the third inning. With Houston leading 2-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he sized up a fastball from fan favorite Kenneth Jones and punished it. The result was his 20th home run of the season, which put the Astros on top, 5-1.
"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Houston skipper Zeb Currier.
