Getting a good performance from center fielder Armando Valenzuela, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-5. Valenzuela went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Cubs. Jamie Cease, now 1-6, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 3 and walking 0. Mario Gomez earned save number 23 this season.

With Chicago leading 4-1 in the top of the fourth, Valenzuela hit a fastball from Manny Vara for a 2-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Cubs ahead, 6-1.

"If it's down the middle," said Valenzuela, "you might as well hit it."
