The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Lazaro Rodriguez came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing New York pitcher Ben McKie, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Detroit on top, 7-6.

"I'm proud of the way we took care of business and got the 'W' today," Rodriguez told the Detroit Today. "Whatever it takes."
