The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, at Safeco Field. The Mariners got a fine performance from right fielder Jaime Callahan, who was 2 for 4 with a home run. Seattle is in first place in the American League West Division with a record of 64-37.
John Ables aided the Seattle cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the shortstop went 1-3 with a walk.
"Bottom line," said Oakland skipper Jon Pearson, "we didn't play well enough to win."
