"Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage.

Well, good pitching also beats bad hitting.

Anthony Gasper of the New York Yankees proved the point at Busch Stadium today, holding the St. Louis Cardinals to 4 hits in a complete game shutout victory.

"Gasper made us look real bad today," Cardinals manager Leyland Thomas said in a postgame interview. "He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."

Gasper had 7 strikeouts and gave up 1 walk as the Yankees took the 8-0 win.

This season Gasper has compiled a 4-12 mark with a 5.18 ERA.
