The New York Yankees managed to get by the Seattle Mariners, 3-2, at Safeco Field. New York pitcher Justin Pigott set himself apart with his performance. In 6.1 innings, Pigott surrendered 2 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 4. He allowed 1 run. The Yankees, at 51-58, sit in third place in the American League East Division.
New York used a well-timed hit by Steve Marston to capture the win. The second baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Yankees ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"We faced good pitching and still got it done," said Marston.
