Rays Lose By a Run at Cincinnati, 6-5
Tampa Bay center fielder George Elkins was sensational. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Cincinnati beat the Rays, 6-5. Dustin Guerin picked up the save, his 3rd. Cincinnati, at 78-37, is 12 games up in the National League Central Division.

Had Tim Mercer not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Mercer hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Reds.

"I like to keep things lively in the clubhouse," said Mercer. "Believe me, it's much easier after a win."
