Cortes drives in 4 runs to Power Mets Offense
The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-7. Catcher Jose Cortes deserved a large share of the credit. Cortes was 2-3 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4 for the Mets. Mike Rutz got the win, improving to 9-7. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 10 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 1 and walking 2. New York, at 51-64, sits in 4th place in the National League East Division.

With New York leading 6-5 in the top of the eighth, Cortes came up to bat against St. Louis pitcher Steve Gbur. Cortes hit a forkball to right for a 2-run home run. His 3rd home run of the season put the Mets on top, 8-5.

"We maximized our offense today," said New York skipper Rodney Smith. "That makes everyone's life easier."
