Pirates Win with Late Heroics
|
The New York Mets could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Erik Rice into a win. Instead, the Pittsburgh Pirates prevailed, 4-3, in 10 innings. Rice threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball. The Pirates saw their record improve to 75-53.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Pittsburgh left fielder Jesse Wheaton, facing Gil Hormann, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Pirates the 4-3 win.
"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Wheaton.
