Hughes, Twins Wallop Mariners, 10-1
|
The Minnesota Twins downed the Seattle Mariners, 10-1, at Safeco Field. The Twins were led by Matt Hughes. Hughes was 3 for 3 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Ken Poole snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit over 3 innings. He's now 9-2 on the season. The second-place Twins improved to 72-60.
Billy Hinson had a big 3-run home run for the Twins in the top of the first inning. With Minnesota leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he sized up a sinker from 28-year old right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cox and punished it. The result was his 34th home run of the season, which put the Twins on top, 4-0.
"You can't sugarcoat this one," said Seattle manager Jonah Beckenstein. "They smoked us."
