Philadelphia 3-2 Losers to Reds
|
Cincinnati pitcher Mike Rutherford had a large part in his team subduing the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2. The opposition could never mount much of a rally against the left-hander. In 5 innings, Rutherford surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 1. He allowed no runs. The third-place Reds improved to 73-60.
Gerardo Machado had a big 2-run home run for the Reds in the bottom of the third inning. With Cincinnati leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a knuckle curve from 22-year old left-handed pitcher Mike Middleton and punished it. The result was his 30th home run of the season, which put the Reds on top, 3-0.
Cincinnati manager BJ Gorman praised his team's "no BS approach."
