The Chicago Cubs wasted an inspired, 6-inning effort from starter Ron Payne, falling 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. Cincinnati reliever Mike Yates was the winner. His record is now 10-6. Mario Gomez took the loss. With the win, Cincinnati raised its record to 93-48.

Cincinnati used the timely hitting of Dave Truax to capture the win. The catcher socked a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Reds ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said Cincinnati manager BJ Gorman.
