The first-place Kansas City Royals took on the New York Yankees in front of a spirited crowd.

Kansas City turned a good performance from starting pitcher Mark Ashford into a 5-2 triumph over the New York Yankees at Kauffman Stadium. Dallas Cart, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 28th save.

Julio Shifflett, who is on pace for 94 RBI this season, took New York hurler Alfredo Cortez deep in the bottom of the first. His 2-run home run put the Royals on top, 2-0. In all, Shifflett had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.

"A confident pitcher is a dangerous thing," said Kansas City manager Connor Gould. "That's what Mark is right now."

Kansas City is now 85-57, New York 51-91.
