Behind a solid performance from catcher Dave Smeal, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 7-3. Smeal went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the Cardinals. Bill McEnerney, the winner, goes to 14-8. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts over 5.1 innings. St. Louis now owns a record of 77-65.

With St. Louis leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Smeal hit a sinker from Chad Crum for a 2-run home run. It was his 6th home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 3-0.
