In a low-scoring tilt between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees, Hugo Coates, who is tied for 4th in the AL in complete games with 1, was the difference-maker. The Kansas City right-hander spearheaded the 3-2 win. Kansas City is now 69-74, New York 55-88.

Had Edwin Gonzalez not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Gonzalez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Royals.

"You have to win 1-0, 3-2, 2-1 games if you want to get to where you want to go," said Royals manager Connor Gould.
