Phillies Win with Late Heroics
|
San Diego got a terrific game from center fielder Randy Wilson. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Philadelphia, 6-5, in 16 innings. Wilson was 2 for 6 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Roger (Eben) Penn, credited with the win in relief, is now 4-4. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1 innings. The first-place Phillies have their sights set on making a deep playoff run.
The decisive blow was delivered by Justin McLaughlin in the bottom of the 16th when he hit a run-scoring double off 33-year old right-handed pitcher Vinny Herrick to win the game for Philadelphia. The home crowd went nuts.
"The game of baseball will test you," said John Lucidi, the Philadelphia skipper. "This one tested us."
