Padres Go Down to Defeat, 7-1
|
In the 7-1 Philadelphia win over San Diego, the impact of Luis Esquivel was substantial. Esquivel, who is tied for 10th in the NL in triples with 9, was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Philadelphia reliever Bronson Kellerman picked up the win, upping his record to 3-6. Bryant Miller took the loss. Their 73-71 record puts the Phillies third in the National League East Division.
The Phillies got an important contribution from right fielder Vicente Vargas, who in the top of the fourth hit a sinker into left for a 2-run triple. It was his 6th triple of the season and put the Phillies ahead, 2-1.
"You never take a win for granted in this league," said Vargas.
