Twins Drop Rays, 5-3
|
The Minnesota Twins topped the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-3, in American League action at Jon Nunez Sr. Stadium. The standout performance belonged to Minnesota pitcher and Independence, Kentucky, native Russell Cottrell. In 7 innings, Cottrell surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 1. He allowed 3 runs. Andres Martines was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 7 of 9 save opportunities.
Had Bill Widby not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Widby hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-3, in favor of the Twins.
Widby called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
The second-place Twins go to 77-66.
