Pirates Slap 5-1 Loss on Washington
|
The rain came, as predicted, but the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals were able to complete their ballgame.
Pittsburgh pitcher Monte Acosta did his part in helping his team defeat the Washington Nationals, 5-1. The opposition could never get too much going against the left-hander. The first-place Pirates, at 79-70, lead the National League East Division by 6 games.
Mark Tallman went 2 for 4 with 2 singles for Pittsburgh. The slick-fielding second baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the third. With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring single off Alvin Janosky. It was his 165th hit of the season.
"Monte pitches with such conviction and you see it in his body language, you see it in his attack plan," said Pittsburgh manager Merlyn Evans.
