Padres Foil Pirates, 4-2
|
Pittsburgh got a decent performance from pitcher Bryan Bassett, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Diego Padres. San Diego won the PNC Park contest, 4-2. Bassett threw 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. San Diego reliever Josh Lipton snagged the win, upping his record to 15-4. Bryan Bassett shouldered the loss. Tim Rogge was credited with the save, his 13th in 15 tries.
San Diego used a clutch at-bat from Brian Patrick to capture the win. The left fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Padres ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Patrick told the San Diego Herald.
The Padres lead the National League West Division by 8½ games.
