Cardinals Suffer 8-6 Home Defeat
|
Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago Cubs.
The 8-6 Chicago win over St. Louis was due largely to Joel Van Vleet. The Cubs catcher went 3-5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Picking up the win was Andy Becker. He went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. The right--hander struck out 3 and walked 1.
With Chicago leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Van Vleet hit a fastball from Darius Shaheed for a 3-run home run. It was his 13th home run of the season and put the Cubs ahead, 4-0.
"We got the victory," said Van Vleet. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."
The 4th-place Cubs now have a record of 69-81.
