Rays Lose at Home, 5-3
|
The New York Mets beat the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 5-3. New York right fielder Jeff Osborne deserved the lion's share of the credit. Osborne was 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Mets. Miguel Montoya picked up the win, improving his season record to 14-12. He struck out 5 in 5 innings. The save was credited to John Rood, his 35th.
Osborne contributed a big hit, a grand slam home run, for New York in the top of the third. With his team trailing 1-0, Osborne took a splitter from Eddie Melendez and stroked the home run to left. His 26th home run of the season allowed the Mets to leap in front, 4-1.
New York manager Rodney Smith commended his team for delivering "maximum effort."
