|
Starting pitcher Bill Whittaker gave the Detroit Tigers a rock-solid effort. The Kingston, Jamaica native helped his team defeat the Cleveland Guardians, 3-2, at Comerica Park. In 5 innings, Whittaker surrendered 1 hit, while striking out 4 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. Jose Oscal recorded the save, making him 1 for 1.
Detroit second baseman Ryan Knee contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, he hit a sinker to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 172nd hit of the season and put the Tigers ahead, 3-1.
"For the most part, I stayed out of the middle of the plate," Whittaker said.
The win makes Detroit 73-79.
