Cubs Pin 5-2 Loss on St. Louis
|
The Chicago Cubs withstood an impressive performance by St. Louis designated hitter Chad Gutshall to defeat the Cardinals, 5-2, at Busch Stadium. Gutshall went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Jonathan Hager earned the save, his 21st in 24 tries. The Cubs improved to 85-66.
Chicago right fielder Nankai Hudkins contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the sixth. With two down, he hit a cutter to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 128th hit of the season and put the Cubs ahead, 4-2.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Chicago skipper Vin Calia.
