Pirates Outmuscle Philadelphia, 9-8
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates did just enough to sneak past the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-8, at PNC Park. Pittsburgh pitcher Masumitsu Ishikawa, in particular, had a standout performance. The winning pitcher was Ishikawa, now 13-6. He tossed 6 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 2. The Pirates now have a record of 94-59.
Pat Wilson had a big grand slam home run for the Pirates in the bottom of the first inning. With Pittsburgh trailing 2-0 and the bases loaded, he sized up a fastball from Greg Earle, who is tied for 4th in the NL in wins with 15, and punished it. The result was his 11th home run of the season, which put the Pirates on top, 4-2.
"Winning is always a team effort," Wilson said after the game.
