The Toronto Blue Jays outlasted Joey Owens and the New York Yankees, 8-7. Owens was impressive in the loss. The New York left fielder went 3 for 4 with a triple, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. The winner was Jay Courtney in relief. His record improves to 5-7. Chase Gifford took the loss. Bryan Bassett, credited with the save, is now 14 for 17 in save opportunities.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the tenth, with the game tied, Kevin Harvey was at the plate when Toronto scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Blue Jays to go in front, 8-7.

"We had a chance to win," said New York manager Mike Hanson, "but we didn't get it done."

The Blue Jays, at 96-61, have now won 4 straight.
