Rob Lewey of the Oakland Athletics was on top of his game.

The 29-year-old tantalized the Texas Rangers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.

"He had the changeup working," Texas manager Stephen Gesualdi said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Oakland hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Lewey told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Lewey has made 33 starts this season, posting 14 wins and 7 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .258 against him and he has 238 strikeouts in 214.2 innings with a 3.77 ERA.
