The Pittsburgh Pirates faced a tough opponent in Atlanta pitcher Jorge Villalona, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Coca-Cola Field by a final score of 3-1. Villalona went 6 innings and allowed no runs. With the win, the Pirates improved to 82-79.

Pittsburgh used the timely hitting of Alejandro Reyes to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Pirates on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Pittsburgh manager Merlyn Evans.
